CCM was created in October 1999 with the mandate to address the knowledge gap in the field of genocide, peace and conflict studies, and post-conflict reconstruction and reconciliation through research, teaching as well as services to the community. Twenty years after the centre was established, its ambition is to become a regional Centre of Excellence (CoE) for research and training in peaceful transformation of conflicts and prevention of genocide. The centre serves as a bridge between academic teaching and research and contributes significantly in policy development in the areas pertaining to its mandate. Currently, the centre runs three Masters Programs:
- MA in Genocide Studies and Prevention (Kigali);
- MA in Peace Studies and Conflict Transformation (Kigali and Musanze) implemented in partnership with Rwanda national Police; and
- MA in Security Studies (Musanze) implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Defence through Rwanda Defence Force Command and Staff College (RDFCSC).
With regard to research, the centre has structured itself into 4 research clusters. Three of these clusters correspond to the MA programs above while the fourth focuses on Inclusive Governance. In addition to these clusters, the centre organizes an annual conference known as the International Conference on the Great lakes Region (ICGLR) that attracts hundreds of participants every year from the African Great Lakes Region and beyond around the topics pertaining to the mandate of CCM. In 2020, CCM will launch its coursework-based PhD program in Peace, Conflict and Security Studies. The program will be implemented in collaboration with the School of Global Studies, Gothenburg University, Sweden. CCM has a wide network of partnerships with both national and international institutions, which contribute significantly to its mission.
